It is proposed to lodge a planning application to extend the runway to 1,799 metres from the current field length of 1,505 metres, subsequent to the completion of a comprehensive environmental impact assessment and a revised scoping report. In fact, approval was given at a public enquiry 12 years ago, but has lapsed, thereby requiring reapplication.
A 1,799-metre runway would be a full 500 metres longer than that of London City Airport. Types of aircraft that can already be handled off of the current runway include, ATR42, BAe146/Avro RJ70/85/100 family, BAe 41 Jetstream, DHC-6 Twin Otter, DHC Dash 7, Bombardier Q series, DHC Dash-8, Dornier Fairchild 288, Dornier Fairchild 328, Embraer 135, Fokker 50, Fokker 70, Saab 340, Saab 2000 and Shorts 360-300. FAL Aviation already regularly handles corporate jets of all types up to and including Global Express and G5 aircraft.
